The large character roster covers several eras of Dragon Ball, while Episode Battle lets you replay major confrontations from different perspectives. The roster includes heroes and villains in their later, more powerful forms, while Team-Up Missions add an original student-life angle between the larger battles. It is flashy, accessible and much more current than the older My Hero entry further down this list.

Digimon Story Time Stranger

Metaphor: ReFantazio

Metaphor: ReFantazio is not based on an existing anime, but it belongs here because its visual style, character design and dramatic presentation are unmistakably anime-inspired. The creators of modern Persona games trade high school corridors for a royal tournament, a travelling gauntlet-runner and a kingdom full of anxious voters.

Combat blends turn-based strategy with quick real-time attacks against weaker enemies. The Archetype system gives party members flexible roles, while the calendar keeps the journey moving. It is a large, ambitious RPG and one of the easiest recommendations on this updated list.

SAND LAND

The animation and music give it a strong identity, and the smaller mission structure suits players who find Genshin Impact’s map slightly too capable of eating an entire weekend. Dragon Quest XI S stays close to the series’ traditional turn-based formula, then refines almost every part of it. The adventure is easy to understand, the party is memorable and the bright character designs come from Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama. It is a long RPG, but the clear structure and flexible difficulty options make it surprisingly comfortable to play.

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition

Genre: RPG.
Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition updates a well-loved action RPG with additional characters and content. Its real-time battles become more flexible as new skills unlock, while the story follows a group whose motives do not always align neatly. The cast is the main reason to stay, especially Yuri, who is refreshingly willing to question the usual heroic rulebook.

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Remastered

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch stands out for its artistic section, inspired by and helped by Studio Ghibli. We follow the story of a boy who seeks a way to save his mother, and introduces us to a fantasy world mired in conflict. We have the freedom to explore and team up with other characters. In addition, it is possible to tame creatures to help us in combat. An interesting RPG!

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Genre: Tactical RPG.
Platforms: Nintendo Switch.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses alternates between academy life and turn-based tactical battles. We teach students, build relationships and shape each unit’s class before placing them on battlefields where positioning matters. Choosing a house changes much of the story, so one playthrough shows only part of the wider conflict.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel

Genre: RPG.
Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita and PC. A Nintendo Switch version is available in selected regions.

Trails of Cold Steel begins a long four-game arc filled with political tensions, school friendships and slow-burn world-building. Its turn-based combat offers plenty of room to customize characters through equipment and magical abilities. The opening game takes its time, but patient JRPG fans are rewarded with an unusually connected story.

The story continues directly through the later Cold Steel games, so this is not a series to play out of order. Start here only when you are comfortable adopting several very large RPGs.

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis

Genre: MMORPG.

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is the current version of Sega’s free online action RPG. It gives us a large open field, fast combat, extensive character creation and cooperative quests. The progression can feel dense at first, but players who love anime-style MMORPGs will find plenty to customize and chase.

Trials of Mana (2020)

Genre: Action RPG.
Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PC.

Trials of Mana is a remake of Seiken Densetsu 3, a classic RPG that came out in 1995. It underwent a tremendous facelift, making the leap to 3D and remastering the soundtrack, among other details. You can select two of six characters as protagonists, with an extra one as support. The plots are not very deep, but the gameplay is very fun, with totally unique characters.

Trials of Mana does not claim to be a very challenging game, so it is accessible to everyone. It is replayable since selecting one character or another will change many aspects of the main story. A perfect RPG to play calmly for a long season!

Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony

Genre: adventure, visual novel, investigation.
Platforms: PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC, Android and iOS.

In Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony you will participate in the cruel game of Monokuma, the very shady stuff. The anime aesthetic of this game is original and striking, and the characters are tremendously charismatic. You will have to investigate 16 characters and try to discover who or who is behind the murders. Everyone wants to survive; some go to great lengths to achieve it!

Although it is the third numbered installment, it features a new story and cast of characters. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is another excellent game, available for the same platforms.

Astral Chain

Genre: hack’n slash, action, adventure.
Platforms: Nintendo Switch.

The world of Astral Chain has been invaded by interdimensional creatures called Chimeras. As law enforcement officers tasked with protecting what’s left of humanity, two twins embark on a perilous journey. Astral Chain invites us to investigate, solve puzzles, and fight in somewhat technical combat, so it is not a simple button masher. A Nintendo Switch exclusive game that is so worth it!

SoulWorker

Genre: MMO, action.
Platforms: PC.

SoulWorker is a free online action RPG built around instanced dungeons and highly animated combat. Each playable character has a distinct weapon and fighting style, and missions can be tackled alone or with a group. The structure becomes repetitive, but it works well when you mainly want quick co-op battles and dramatic attacks.

Code Vein

Genre: Action RPG.
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Code Vein is often described as an anime-styled Soulslike, although it is more flexible and story-driven than that label suggests. We create a Revenant, explore a ruined world and change character classes freely through the Blood Code system. Combat remains demanding, but an AI companion makes the journey less lonely and usually less punishing.

It can be played both solo and online cooperatively with another player.

Attack on Titan 2

Genre: action, hack’n slash.
Platforms: PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4.

Attack on Titan 2 lets us create an original Scout and move through the anime’s early story using omni-directional mobility gear. Quiet relationship and preparation sections lead into frantic missions where positioning a strike matters more than swinging wildly. The Final Battle edition adds later story content and is the most complete version to buy.

.hack//G.U. Last Recode

Genre: Action RPG.
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC.

.hack//GU Last Recode is an excellent remastering of the .hack//GU trilogy, to which it adds a fourth chapter to close the story. It’s an action RPG that, in part, feels like an MMORPG due to the playable approach. You handle a single character, Haseo. However, you can team up with others and battle in real time against countless enemies, in a variety of dungeons to complete.

Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise

Genre: Action RPG, beat’em up.
Platforms: PlayStation 4.

Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise gives Kenshiro the exploration, side activities and brawling structure associated with the Like a Dragon series. The main story sends him through the city of Eden in search of Yuria, but naturally there is still time for bartending, racing and other wonderfully unnecessary distractions.

Azur Lane

Genre: 2D shoot’em up, RPG, simulation.
Platforms: Android and iOS.

Azur Lane combines side-scrolling shooting with RPG progression and a large roster of characters inspired by historical warships. Most battles can be played manually or automated once your fleet is strong enough. It is free to play and generous in some areas, but the character-collection systems are still designed to keep you returning.

There’s also Azur Lane Crosswave for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC, but it’s not as great by comparison.

BlazBlue: Centralfiction

Genre: fighting.

BlazBlue: Centralfiction is one of the most complete entries in Arc System Works’ long-running fighting series. It includes a large roster, several offline modes and a substantial story, while the combat rewards anyone willing to learn its more technical systems. Newcomers may need practice, but the character variety is excellent.

Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx 2

Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx 2 puts us in the shoes of a Liberator, who can handle demonic beings. The mission is to defend civilians from the Acolytes, the rival faction and the main enemy of the game. The game plays out like other Shin Megami Tensei titles, with turn-based combat, plenty of RPG elements, and several hundred beings to recruit.

Despite having microtransactions with a gacha model (with item summons), you can play it all without paying!

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! begins like a cheerful school visual novel and then very deliberately pulls the floor away. You join a literature club, write poems and spend time with its four members, but the game soon becomes psychological horror. It includes disturbing themes, so this is not a harmless dating sim for younger players.

My Hero: One’s Justice 2

My Hero One’s Justice 2 is a colorful 3D arena fighter featuring heroes and villains from My Hero Academia. Characters use their Quirks in destructible environments, with sidekicks adding support attacks during battle. It remains fun for local or online matches, although the newer All’s Justice is now the better starting point for most players.
